We understand that while cooking may be the healthiest option, it may not always be the realistic option. Fortunately, there are ways to make eating out as healthy as possible for you. Here are some tips to consider:
- Portions: restaurants typically serve portions far bigger than needed. Divide your plate in half and share the other half with a friend or have it boxed to go for lunch the following day.
- Salad add-ons: while salads are typically a healthy option, restaurant salads can be the heaviest options on the menu. Keep an eye out for add-ons such as cheese, cream-based dressings, bacon, croutons, and candied nuts. The garden salad is typically a safe bet and using vinegar or requesting an oil based dressing on the side can give you control over the amount that you use.
- Sides: a delicious healthy meal can be made up of several healthy sides such as steamed veggies, legumes and brown rice.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want! Restaurants aim to please and if they know what you are looking for, they are typically happy to accommodate when they can.
